KATHMANDU: The award-winning Israeli documentary Gimpel the Fool Returns to Poland was screened in Kathmandu as part of the 7th Nepal Cultural International Film Festival 2026, drawing strong interest from audiences and film scholars alike.
The film’s director and lead actor Howard Rypp—renowned Israeli theatre artist and founder of the “Nefesh” Theatre in Israel—visited Nepal to represent Israel at the festival. The documentary is based on the celebrated short story Gimpel the Fool by late Nobel Laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer.
The screening sparked thoughtful discussions among viewers on the life, literary legacy, and enduring relevance of Singer’s work. In recognition of its powerful storytelling, artistic excellence, and meaningful contribution to global cinema, the film was awarded First Prize at the festival.
The Embassy of Israel facilitated additional screenings of the documentary at Dibyabhumi Multiple College and Imperial World School in Kathmandu.
These sessions were organized for students and faculty members and featured an interactive discussion with Mr. Rypp, who shared insights into the film’s themes, creative process, historical background, and reflections on the Holocaust.
