KATHMANDU: In the upcoming House of Representatives election, candidates aged 25 to over 80 have also been included in the closed list under the proportional representation (PR) electoral system.
According to the details included in the closed list of candidates published by the Election Commission (EC), there are relatively more male candidates among adults and female candidates among the youth.
EC Assistant Spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC said there are a total of 3,135 candidates on the closed list, of which 1,772 are women and 1,363 are men.
There are 168 candidates in the 25 to 29 age group, with 117 women and 51 men, 285 in the 30 to 40 age group, with 201 women and 84 men, 401 in the 35 to 39 age group, with 268 women and 133 men, and 535 in the 40 to 44 age group, with 341 women and 194 men.
Similarly, there are 294 women and 162 men totaling 456 candidates in the 45 to 49 age group, 220 women and 166 men totaling 386 candidates in the 50 to 54 age group, 155 women and 200 men totaling 355 candidates in the 55 to 59 age group, 103 women and 158 men totaling 261 candidates in the 60 to 64 age group, 44 women and 114 men totaling 158 candidates in the 65 to 69 age group, 19 women and 67 men totaling 86 candidates in the 70 to 74 age group, nine women and 23 men totaling 32 candidates in the 75 to 79 age group, and one woman and 11 men totaling 12 candidates in the over 80 age group.
Likewise, there are 911 candidates from Indigenous and Nationalities category, 946 from Khas Arya category, 425 from the Dalit quota, 203 from Tharu community, 502 from Madhesi category, and 148 from Muslim communities under the inclusive groups of the PR list.
Sixty-four political parties submitted the closed lists of candidates to the EC on December 28 and 29. Among them, only 22 parties nominated candidates in all 110 constituencies.
The EC had decided to remove the names of 76 candidates from the closed list based on complaints received regarding the candidates included in the closed list submitted by political parties to the Office of the Election Officer for the proportional representation system of the House of Representatives elections.
