Tarique Rahman to be sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh today

DHAKA: Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which secured a majority in the recently concluded general elections in Bangladesh, is set to be appointed Prime Minister on Tuesday.

The BNP has announced that its chairman, Tarique Rahman, will take the oath of office as Prime Minister on Tuesday.

According to the BBC, the swearing-in ceremony for the Prime Minister and members of the Council of Ministers has been scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Sixteen months after the student movement, Bangladesh is set to receive an elected government today (Tuesday).

Previously, an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus had governed for 16 months. On Monday night, Yunus announced in his farewell address that he would step down.

In the general elections held last Thursday (12 February), the BNP alliance won 212 seats, securing a two-thirds majority, while the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance won 77 seats.
