MORANG: A Nepal–India border security coordination meeting held in Biratnagar on Thursday decided to close key border points for 72 hours ahead of the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.

Security officials from both countries discussed election security arrangements as well as concerns related to cross border theft and smuggling. Representatives from the Indian districts of Kishanganj, Araria, and Supaul, which share borders with Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari districts of Koshi Province, participated in the meeting alongside Nepali authorities.

According to officials, border points connecting the two countries in the affected districts will remain fully closed from the night of March 2 until the night of March 5. During this period, all cross border movement will be suspended except for essential services.

Assistant Chief District Officer Saroj Koirala of Morang said the Nepali side also sought cooperation from Indian security agencies to prevent the entry of Indian registered vehicles for election campaigning during the restricted period. Authorities from both sides agreed to enhance coordination to ensure a peaceful and secure voting process.
