KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) has reiterated the government’s commitment to safely relocate vulnerable squatter settlements in Kathmandu, citing recurring flood risks and long-standing urban management challenges.

In a recent public statement, Shah said thousands of residents living along riverbanks are forced to flee each year during floods, often losing their belongings and relying on emergency rescue. He stressed that the issue, which has persisted for years, can no longer be deferred and requires a permanent solution through proper resettlement.

“We cannot continue waiting for another disaster while leaving people in unsafe conditions,” he said, emphasizing that relocation would be carried out humanely and without the use of force.

Shah also noted that unplanned settlements along rivers have obstructed drainage systems, contributing to pollution and sanitation problems across the valley. Relocation, he said, would help improve urban infrastructure alongside ensuring safer housing for affected communities.

He added that the government is preparing to fulfill commitments related to landless settlements, including identifying genuine squatters and facilitating land distribution through due process.
