KATHMANDU: Opposition parties have decided to collectively oppose the government’s decision to proceed with ordinances on the Constitutional Council and cooperatives, accusing it of bypassing Parliament and undermining democratic procedures.

The decision was taken in a meeting of opposition parties held at Singha Durbar on Tuesday, convened by the main opposition Nepali Congress, where leaders agreed to mount a united front against the move.

Tensions escalated after Prime Minister Balendra Shah recommended two ordinances to President Ramchandra Paudel, triggering a political backlash. The government’s decision to advance the measures through the ordinance route has been sharply criticized by opposition parties.

The controversy further deepened after Shah proposed changes allowing decisions to be made even with only three members present.

Opposition leaders compared the approach to earlier practices under former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, calling it a dangerous precedent.

Following the developments, opposition parties concluded that the government was increasingly bypassing parliamentary processes and decided to respond collectively.
