KATHMANDU: The Nepal Women Wrestling Foundation has achieved international recognition after its wrestling match held at Tilicho lake in Manang was included in the World Book of Records, London.

The event, conducted at an altitude of 4,919 metres at Tilicho—often cited as the “highest altitude lake”—has been officially acknowledged by the record book for its unique setting.

During the match held on November 26, Nepali wrestlers Bhagwati Khadka (Unika) and Asmita Sunar (Jureli) competed against American wrestler Camille Ligon (Holidayed). Both Khadka and Sunar emerged victorious in the contest.

Former Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar handed over the certificate of recognition to Khadka and Sunar during a formal programme. Both athletes also hold leadership roles in the Nepal Women Wrestling Foundation, with Khadka serving as president and Sunar as treasurer.

The foundation, which regularly organizes domestic and international wrestling events, had earlier staged a friendly wrestling match at Kalapatthar in Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality of Solukhumbu at an altitude of 5,633 metres, aiming to set a record for the highest-altitude wrestling match in the world.

That Everest Day event featured Bhagwati Khadka defeating American wrestler Daniel Morrison (Dani Mo), while Asmita Sunar acted as referee.
