KATHMANDU: The Nepal Police has released its latest monthly traffic report, revealing a worrying rise in accidents caused by driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or controlled substances across the country.

According to official statistics of Nepal Police compiled for the mid- April to Mid-May in fiscal year 2025/026, a total of 124 road accidents were directly linked to intoxicated driving. The report highlights a significant public safety concern, with these incidents resulting in 12 deaths and 174 injuries nationwide.

The data shows that major urban areas and key highway corridors continue to bear the highest burden of DUI-related crashes, with the Kathmandu Valley and Koshi Province emerging as the most affected regions.

The Kathmandu Valley recorded the highest number of incidents, with 37 accidents resulting in 2 deaths and 50 injuries. Koshi Province followed closely with 35 accidents, also reporting 2 fatalities and 53 injuries.

Similarly, Madhesh Province reported 20 accidents and 27 injuries, with no fatalities. Bagmati Province (excluding the Valley) recorded 12 accidents, 1 death, and 19 injuries. Lumbini Province saw 9 accidents, resulting in 3 deaths and 15 injuries. Gandaki Province reported only 5 accidents, but recorded a disproportionately high severity rate with 4 deaths and 3 injuries. Karnali and Sudurpashchim Provinces recorded the lowest figures, with 3 accidents each. Sudurpashchim reported 8 injuries, while Karnali recorded 3 injuries. Neither province reported fatalities.
