KATHMANDU: Lawmakers in Tuesday’s House of Representatives meeting urged the government to take immediate action regarding rising drowning casualties and recent storm damages across the country.

During the emergency session, RSP lawmaker Ashish Gajurel highlighted the lack of water safety awareness, noting that hundreds of children and youths drown in Nepal annually.

Citing a recent tragedy in Sindhuli where two young children drowned in the Sunkoshi River, he demanded that local bodies install warning signs, erect barriers in hazardous zones, and introduce water-survival and swimming programs in schools.

Simultaneously, lawmakers called for urgent relief and resettlement for families affected by a devastating windstorm and hail across the nation.

The storm destroyed seasonal crops, uprooted electricity poles and damaged numerous structures in Baglung and Gulmi.
