KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended conducting a deep and meticulous investigation into several individuals, including Rabi Lamichhane, the Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), who fled from Nakkhu Jail during the Gen Z protest. The Commission stated that the investigation must identify the guilty parties and take action against them in accordance with the law.

The Commission released its investigative report on the Gen Z protest today. The report notes that escaping from a prison without authorization directly violates prevailing laws, necessitating an investigation into those involved.

Based on the report submitted by the committee formed under the coordination of Commission member Lily Thapa to investigate human rights violations during the events of September 8 and 9, the Commission concluded that the actions and roles played by RSP Chairman Lamichhane and the jailer during the movement instigated the escape.

Accordingly, the Commission has recommended bringing Jailer Satya Raj Joshi, Member of Parliament (MP) Manish Jha, and MP Hari Dhakal under the scope of suspicion for further investigation.

Lamichhane had emerged from Nakkhu Jail on September 9, the day after the Gen Z protest. Individuals including Jha and Dhakal had reached Nakkhu Jail to receive Lamichhane.

The report further notes that news regarding escaped prisoners, who illegally fled from the jail into society and went on to commit crimes again, has been found published and broadcasted across various media outlets.
