KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and called for a ceasefire during negotiations to help end the war.

In an open letter, Zelensky said peace could only be achieved through direct engagement between Ukraine and Russia and suggested holding talks in Switzerland or Turkey.

The Kremlin confirmed it had received the letter and said Putin would be briefed.

Speaking in Saint Petersburg, Putin said he was willing to reach an agreement but insisted compromises were necessary.

Ukraine has continued to reject Russia’s demands for territorial concessions.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called the proposal a serious effort to end the conflict, while US President Donald Trump said it would be “great” if the two leaders met.
