KATHMANDU: Canada secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 by defeating South Africa 1–0 in the first knockout match played at Los Angeles Stadium, USA, on Monday.

Stephen Eustáquio scored the decisive goal in second-half stoppage time to seal Canada’s victory.

The win marks a major milestone for Canada, as they reached the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in their history in their third FIFA World Cup appearance. In their previous World Cup campaigns, Canada had failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Canada advanced to the knockout stage as the Group B runners-up, while South Africa qualified as the Group A runners-up.
