KATHMANDU: The Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) outbreak, which was confirmed on June 19 at the Central Zoo in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, is now heading towards control.

According to the zoo administration, immediate measures were taken following the detection, including closing the zoo to the public, securing affected areas, treating infected or sick animals, and implementing strict containment protocols to prevent the virus from spreading.

Information Officer of the Central Zoo, Ganesh Koirala, shared that disinfection drives, thorough cleaning of animal enclosures, and medical treatment of sick animals have been prioritized. He revealed that based on recent tests, no new cases of Bird Flu have been detected inside the zoo since June 26.

To assess the ground reality, a Bird Flu Control and Study Committee has been formed. Koirala stated that the committee will prepare a detailed report within a few days. The final decision on when to reopen the currently closed zoo to the general public will be made based on this report and subsequent expert recommendations.

Meanwhile, the Department of Livestock Services has cautioned that the risk of Bird Flu remains high across the Kathmandu Valley. According to the department, high vigilance is still necessary as the virus has been spreading rapidly in various pockets of the valley. The zoo administration, however, assured that they are prioritizing animal safety and public health, taking all necessary precautions while awaiting the expert report for reopening.
