KATHMANDU: Paras Mani Gelal, the Member of Parliament from Udayapur-1, has clarified his viral social media comments regarding the “transfer of a mayor,” explaining that it was used as a political metaphor for voting non-performing leaders out of office.
Speaking after widespread complaints from constituents about neglected local infrastructure, Gelal emphasized that while civil servants are part of a permanent mechanism that requires guidance, the sovereign public holds the ultimate power to “transfer” or dismiss elected officials through the ballot box.
He claimed that critics weaponized a misleadingly short clip of his speech, where he had actually encouraged citizens to campaign for a better mayor in the next election.
Reaffirming his role as a lawmaker, Gelal noted that laws are dynamic and that future generations might even establish legal recall mechanisms for failing leaders.
