KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged residents to stay alert, warning of a moderate risk of flash floods in several districts today.

According to the department, there is also a possibility of heavy rainfall in the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, as well as in one or two locations within Madhesh Province.

The department stated that the country is currently under the influence of monsoon winds.

The monsoon trough is situated slightly south of its normal position over the eastern parts of Nepal, while it remains near its normal position in the western region.

Binod Parajuli, a hydrologist at the department, reported that water levels in small rivers flowing through Ilam, Jhapa, Tehrathum, Panchthar, Dhankuta, Saptari, Sunsari, Morang, Doti, Dadeldhura, and surrounding districts are expected to rise significantly, posing a risk of flash floods.

Over the past 24 hours, most parts of the country experienced light to moderate rainfall.

The highest rainfall was recorded at Yangjakot in Kaski, reaching 98.6 mm.
