KATHMANDU: A session of the House of Representatives was abruptly adjourned for 15 minutes on Wednesday following a heated dispute triggered by a controversial remark from an opposition lawmaker directed at the Speaker.
The disruption began immediately after Speaker Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal opened the meeting at the Parliament Building in Singha Durbar.
Lawmakers from opposition parties—including the Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), Nepali Communist Party, Shram Sanskriti Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party—stood up from their seats in unison to protest.
Seeking to manage the unrest, Speaker Aryal initially allocated speaking time to Nepali Congress MP Pramila Kumari Gachhadar before giving the floor to CPN (UML) MP Rajendra Rai.
The situation rapidly escalated when MP Rai opened his address by asking, “Honorable Speaker, I have a submission to make; do you hear with your ears or not?”
The remark drew an immediate and sharp rebuke from Speaker Aryal, who cut Rai off and ordered him to maintain parliamentary decorum.
Warning that the lawmaker was showing contempt for both the Speaker and the House, Aryal said, “Honorable member, maintain decorum. I will not direct you or give you time to proceed any further. Please sit down. You are showing contempt for the Speaker and the House.”
When Rai refused to yield, the Speaker revoked his speaking time and assigned the floor to another lawmaker, Parshuram Tamang.
The incident quickly sparked a chaotic, polarized debate across the aisle between treasury and opposition benches.
As a result of the escalating row and continued opposition obstruction by the CPN (UML), Speaker Aryal adjourned the session for 15 minutes before the House could even enter its official agenda for the day.
