KATHMANDU: Until a few days ago, Kathmandu Metropolitan City police regular deployment controlled haphazard parking.
However, after the self-immolation and death of Ganesh Nepali, city police presence on the streets has declined.
Following the death, the Ministry of Home Affairs formed an investigation committee and is questioning metropolitan police.
Fearing attacks or security risks, municipal police have temporarily halted regular street duties.
One city police personnel stated, “Since there is a visible risk to our lives right now, we are not conducting our regular street deployment at the moment.”
Consequently, unorganized parking has resurfaced. Ride-sharing drivers are parking along curbs, waiting long periods for passengers, and occupying road space while using mobile phones.
This has disrupted vehicle movement, increasing traffic jams and disorder.
