KATHMANDU: Following continuous rainfall, the water level of the Bagmati River rose, flooding the Radha Soami Landless Settler Holding Center located in Sundarighat, Kirtipur Municipality-10, Kathmandu.
With floodwaters entering the center, the displaced squatters who were taking shelter there have been forced into another round of displacement.
Victims reported that after the holding center submerged, security personnel managed to retrieve some belongings using boats, but most of their household items, clothing, and other essential goods were soaked and destroyed.
According to them, the floodwaters rushed in suddenly during the night, leaving many with no time to move their belongings to a safer location.
They also expressed grievances that security personnel arrived at the scene only after around 2:00 AM.According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, information about the flooding was received at 1:38 AM, after which a joint team of 30 personnel—including disaster management units under the command of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) from the Riot Control Regiment—and an additional 30 personnel from the Nepal Police were deployed.
The deployed team rescued 54 out of the 154 individuals residing in the holding center and safely relocated them to the Smriti Bhawan at Tribhuvan University.
Among the remaining residents, 6 have gone to stay with relatives or at nearby hostels, while 94 refused to leave and are staying in a safe, unflooded area within the center itself.
The victims are currently retrieving their soaked belongings from the holding center, and preparations are underway to move them to Kharipati.
