KATHMANDU: Following the collapse of alliance between the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN (UML), both Lumbini and Bagmati provincial governments are facing major political reshuffles today as partners move to withdraw support.
In Lumbini Province, the ruling Nepali Congress is preparing to exit the UML-led government.
NC Lumbini Province Chief Whip Jamuna Dhakal stated that a meeting of the parliamentary party leader, whips, and ministers scheduled for this afternoon will formalize the decision.
Following the meeting, five NC ministers—including Economic Affairs Minister Dhanendra Karki and Urban Development Minister Saroj Thapa—are expected to resign and officially withdraw their support, pushing the current UML government into a minority.
In response, the UML is reportedly holding continuous dialogues with the Nepali Communist Party to explore a new ruling partnership.
Concurrently in Bagmati Province, the dynamic is reversed under Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya (NC).
Following the shift, six UML ministers are prepared to step down to clear the path for a new government.
UML leaders confirmed that the ministers will submit their collective resignations immediately after the 4:00 PM cabinet meeting today.
One minister noted that given the changing political equations, continuing in the current provincial setup is no longer viable, and they aim to facilitate the formation of a new council of ministers.
