ATLANTA: FIFA could take disciplinary action against Argentina after its players displayed a banner supporting the country’s claim to the Falkland Islands following their 2-1 World Cup semifinal victory over England.
The banner, which declared the islands to be Argentine, was displayed during post-match celebrations despite FIFA’s rules prohibiting political messages at football events.
The incident has drawn criticism from United Kingdom officials, who called for an investigation.
The Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory, remain the subject of a long-running sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina, which fought a war over the islands in 1982.
