KATHMANDU: Continuous monsoon rainfall has triggered widespread floods and landslides, completely blocking six major highways across the country.
According to the Nepal Police, traffic has been heavily disrupted, prompting authorities to enforce strict nighttime travel bans on several vulnerable routes.
Movement on the Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunjebesi section of the BP Highway has been restricted to daytime hours only (4:00 AM to 6:00 PM) due to flash flood risks, while the Kanti Lokpath in Makwanpur is closed from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM to mitigate landslide hazards.
Nepal Police Spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle reported total blockages on multiple vital corridors due to heavy debris.
The Mechi Highway in Ilam has become entirely impassable due to severe mud accumulation at Rajduwali, while falling boulders have shut down the Saljhandi–Dhorpatan road at Dhungekhola in Arghakhanchi.
Furthermore, the Araniko Highway in Sindhupalchok faces dual blockages from landslides at both Zero Kilo and the Kodari sector, and the Kaligandaki Corridor in Baglung remains closed after a massive mudslide crashed onto the road at Belbager.
