KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority, the Asian Development Bank, and key stakeholders marked the formal closure of the Power Transmission and Distribution Strengthening System Project in Madhesh Province this week.

Funded with Norwegian support, the initiative successfully expanded regional power networks, delivering reliable grid access to underserved households, farmers, and small businesses to foster long-term economic growth.
Beyond hardware installation, the project emphasized inclusive social development.

It supported over 400 local entrepreneurs, a significant portion of whom are women, with new livelihood opportunities. The initiative also introduced clean cooking alternatives, executed last-mile electrification for isolated populations, and conducted community safety training sessions on the efficient and productive use of electricity.

Speaking at the event, the Norwegian Ambassador Dagny Mjøs praised the strong partnership between the Government of Nepal, the ADB, and the NEA.

The Ambassador noted that while Nepal’s hydropower capacity now exceeds peak demand, the country has reached a critical turning point where ensuring reliable, inclusive, and last-mile delivery remains the key institutional challenge. Norway’s holistic approach continues to support the entire energy value chain, from generation to governance.
