KATHMANDU: A delegation from the United Nations, led by the UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal Lila Peters Yahia, paid a courtesy visit to Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sasmit Pokharel at the Ministry in Singha Durbar on Monday.
The meeting focused on bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest, with discussions centered on ongoing UN support and collaboration in Nepal’s education sector.
The delegation included representatives from several UN agencies, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Minister Pokharel expressed gratitude for the continuous support provided by UN agencies in strengthening Nepal’s education system.
The discussions particularly highlighted UNICEF’s contributions in inclusive education, evidence-based learning, use of technology, Sustainable Development Goals implementation, literacy, and lifelong learning.
Issues related to mental health of students studying abroad were also discussed in coordination with IOM.
Under WFP-supported programmes, the conversation included improving the school midday meal initiative by linking it with locally produced agricultural goods to enhance nutrition.
UNFPA’s work in comprehensive sexuality education and digital learning was also reviewed, along with IOM’s support in safe migration-related education initiatives.
Minister Pokharel expressed Nepal’s interest in expanding collaboration in inclusive education, teacher professional development, digital learning, and the integration of science and technology in education.
Resident Coordinator Yahia reaffirmed that education remains a key priority for UN agencies and pledged continued cooperation and support in the future.
