KATHMANDU: Authorities on Saturday launched a major demolition drive targeting незакон structures built in violation of regulations along the banks of Phewa Lake in Pokhara.
The operation, which began early in the morning following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to clear all structures built within a 65-meter boundary of the lake. Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to enforce environmental and urban planning laws around one of Nepal’s most iconic tourist destinations.
Heavy equipment, including dozers, was deployed during the campaign. Among the most high-profile actions, authorities partially demolished structures at Hotel Waterfront, owned by noted tourism entrepreneur Karna Shakya. The demolition included parts of the hotel’s swimming pool and entrance gate.
According to Hari Bahadur Basnet, Deputy Superintendent of Police and spokesperson for the Kaski District Police Office, around 150 security personnel were mobilized for the operation. The deployment included teams from Nepal Police, the Baidam Police Office, municipal police, and the Armed Police Force Nepal.
The move has sparked dissatisfaction among some local residents and business operators, who say the demolition has been abrupt and disruptive.
The crackdown follows recent high-level discussions between Prime Minister Balen Shah and Pokhara Mayor Dhanraj Acharya over the long-standing issue of unregulated construction around Phewa Lake.
Authorities maintain that the demolition will continue until all незакон structures within the restricted zone are cleared.
