KATHMANDU: The impact of the heat wave (loo) in the western Terai region of the country is likely to persist today.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, there is a possibility of a heat wave sweeping through some parts of the Terai plains in Sudurpashchim and Lumbini provinces today.

Department spokesperson Bibhuti Pokharel urged everyone to take special precautions, noting that extreme heat in the Terai regions of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces could adversely affect public health.

According to the department’s weather forecast, the maximum temperature is expected to reach 38°C to 40°C in Dhangadhi and 39°C to 41°C in Nepalgunj today.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Bhairahawa, Birgunj, Ghorahi, and Simara are projected to hover around 35°C to 38°C.

In contrast, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in the hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.

Rain is expected in areas including the Kathmandu Valley, Pokhra, Dhankuta, Biratnagar, Dharan, and Taplejung. The maximum temperature in the Kathmandu Valley today is forecast to be between 28°C and 30°C.

The department has advised residents to avoid going outdoors unnecessarily during peak heat hours, drink plenty of fluids, wear light cotton clothing, and pay special attention to children, senior citizens, and people with chronic illnesses.

Climate experts point out that due to climate change, both the duration and intensity of heat waves in Nepal’s Terai region have been increasing in recent years, casting a direct impact on health, agriculture, and daily life.
