KATHMANDU: During today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, attention was drawn to how citizens and roads across various districts have been recently affected by heavy rain, strong winds, and landslides.

In the emergency hour of the house, Member of Parliament (MP) Balawati Sharma drew the government’s attention to provide appropriate compensation and relief, stating that strong winds in Baglung blew away the roofs of schools and houses, alongside impacting agricultural crops.

MP Som Sharma expressed the view that the government must be serious about disaster risk management and urged for the installation of corrugated zinc sheets on mud houses in rural areas.

MP Sandeep Rana presented an instance where people died after consuming poisonous mushrooms and requested the development of a system to classify edible and poisonous mushrooms. MP Govinda Panthi urged for relief and compensation to be provided after an assessment, noting that Malika Rural Municipality in Gulmi was heavily affected by the storm.

MP Bhumika Limbu Subba drew the government’s attention to the disruption of certain road sections along the Mid-Hill (Pushpalal) Highway and how daily life in eastern hilly districts has been affected by landslides.

MP Ashish Gajurel expressed concern over the loss of children’s lives due to rain and floods at various locations on the BP Highway, suggesting that pre-awareness actions in disaster management be made effective.

MP Narendra Kumar Kerung mentioned that damage was caused in areas like Falaicha (Dobhane) along the Mid-Hill (Pushpalal) Highway due to unseasonal monsoon, and requested to resume construction work after assessing the exact damage.

MP Kshitiz Thebe demanded compensation for the people affected by disaster-related incidents caused by the heavy rain on May 22 in Taplejung and Panchthar districts. MP Ram Binod Yadav expressed grief over the death of a pregnant woman during treatment in Dhanusha due to the negligence of health workers, and drew attention to ensure such incidents do not happen.

MP Sushant Vaidik urged for immediate attention as electricity has been cut off for the past few days in Pyuthan, Rolpa, and Arghakhanchi districts.

MP Rekha Kumari Yadav expressed objection over attempts to demolish 34 households in Gaushala of Mahottari district, stating it goes against the decision of the Supreme Court. MP Shambhu Prasad Dhakal demanded relief in Jhapa, noting that electricity was disrupted and banana farming was damaged due to the rainfall.

MP Prem Bahadur Bayak informed that 200 sheep were lost in Ramaroshan of Achham due to recent rains and landslides, and requested that relief be provided to the victim farmers.
