KATHMANDU: Five women have secured victories in the first-past-the-post (FPTP) or direct election system for the House of Representatives, according to results announced so far by the Election Commission.
Among the elected candidates, four represent the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP), while one is from the Nepali Congress. From the RSP, Rubina Acharya (Morang-1), Ranju Neupane (Kathmandu-1), Bina Gurung (Kaski-3), and Komal Gyawali (Kailali-1) have been declared elected.
Similarly, Basana Thapa of the Nepali Congress has won the election from Dailekh-1, becoming a member of the House of Representatives. She is likely to be the only woman elected from the Nepali Congress through the FPTP, or direct electoral system.
Meanwhile, several other women candidates are currently leading in the ongoing vote count. Nine women from the RSP are ahead in their respective constituencies.
Those maintaining leads as of Saturday include Nisha Dangi (Jhapa-1), Indira Rana Magar (Jhapa-2), Asha Jha (Morang-5), Pushpa Kumari Chaudhary (Saptari-1), Gauri Kumari (Mahottari-4), Nitima Bhandari (Sarlahi-1), Ashika Tamang (Dhading-1), Toshima Karki (Lalitpur-3), and Sobita Gautam (Chitwan-3).
