KATHMANDU: Former Chief Minister Rajendra Rai attempted to violently pull and throw a microphone from the rostrum during a heated session of the Koshi Province Assembly.

The incident occurred after Speaker Ambar Bahadur Bista attempted to proceed with the assembly’s proceedings despite strong protests from the opposition benches. Infuriated by the Speaker’s move, Rai charged from the opposition seats toward the rostrum to vandalize the microphone.

However, security personnel deployed inside the hall immediately intervened, restraining Rai and physically removing him from the rostrum before he could damage the equipment.

Following the commotion, Speaker Bista repeatedly urged the lawmakers to maintain decorum and respect the sanctity of the provincial assembly.

The tension had been brewing since Tuesday’s assembly session, where the opposition parties launched a fierce protest after the government’s policies and programs were rushed through and passed without allowing time for amendments.

The opposition continued their aggressive agitation into Wednesday’s session. Following the latest disruption and the physical altercation at the rostrum, the Speaker officially adjourned the provincial assembly meeting for half an hour.
