NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving elected prime minister, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office and surpassing the 4,398-day record held by India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Modi, who has served continuously since May 26, 2014, achieved the milestone during his third consecutive term.

World leaders, including Australia’s Scott Morrison, Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Maldives’ Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and Kenya’s William Ruto, congratulated Modi, praising his leadership and contributions to India’s development and global influence.

While Nehru served longer overall from 1947 to 1964, his first years were spent leading an interim government. Modi now holds the record for the longest uninterrupted tenure by an elected prime minister in India.
