CHENNAI: C. Joseph Vijay is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, 2026, marking the end of nearly six decades of alternating rule by the State’s two dominant Dravidian parties — Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Saturday appointed Vijay as Chief Minister-designate after he secured the support of 120 MLAs-elect in the 234-member Assembly.

Vijay will take the oath of office at Nehru Stadium at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Nine ministers from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam are also expected to be sworn in alongside him.

The Governor has directed Vijay to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly on or before May 13, 2026.

The political uncertainty that gripped the State over the past few days ended on Saturday evening after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League extended support to the TVK, taking its tally to 120 seats.

Later, Vijay met Governor Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and submitted letters of support from the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), VCK and IUML.

In separate letters addressed to the Governor on Saturday, VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan and IUML national president K.M. Kader Mohideen said their parties were extending unconditional support to the TVK-led government under Vijay’s leadership.

The TVK had already secured the backing of the Congress party, which holds five seats in the Assembly, taking the newly formed coalition’s strength to 120 — two above the majority mark in the 234-member House.
