KOLKATA: South Africa posted a competitive 169/8 in their 20 overs in the first semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Wednesday evening, setting New Zealand a target of 170runs to book a place in the final.

After being put in to bat, the Proteas recovered from early setbacks to build a competitive total on a surface that offered assistance to both seamers and spinners, thanks to a brilliant fifty by all-rounder Marco Jansen. Jansen scored 55 off 30 balls.

The Proteas lost early wickets, with openers Quinton de Kock (10) and Ryan Rickelton (0) dismissed inside the powerplay, both falling to spinner Cole McConchie. Captain Aiden Markram was out for 18, while David Miller contributed just 6 before his dismissal at the halfway mark.

Despite the early struggles, South Africa rebuilt through useful contributions from Dewald Brevis (34) and Tristan Stubbs (29). The lower order also chipped in, notably Jansen, who accelerated late with a strong cameo, helping the team finish with a solid 150-plus total, which once looked improbable.  Jansen hit five sixes and two fours in his brilliant innings.

New Zealand’s bowlers, especially Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra, struck key blows to keep the innings in check, leaving the match finely poised as the Black Caps prepare to chase in favorable conditions in the second half.

Both Henry and Ravindra took two wickets each. McConchie also claimed two wickets.  Lockie Ferguson took one wicket and James Neesham also took one wicket.

New Zealand have begun their chase positively and will need a measured approach against South Africa’s varied bowling attack in what promises to be a tense knockout contest.
