KATHMANDU: Monsoon rain, centered in western Nepal, is set to shift toward eastern and central Nepal starting Sunday.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast that rainfall will be more concentrated in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and the eastern regions of Lumbini Province over the next two days, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rain in some places.
According to meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane from the department, the monsoon trough is currently moving eastward closer to the Terai region of Nepal, which is expected to increase the intensity of rainfall in eastern and central Nepal from Sunday.
Meanwhile, relatively less rainfall is likely in the western parts of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces.
According to the department, moderate rain will occur on Sunday in most places across the Terai region of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as in a few areas of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim.
Additionally, there is a possibility of heavy rain in one or two places in the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, including Madhesh.
On Sunday night, the department noted that heavy to very heavy rain could occur in one or two locations within the Terai regions of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
In particular, there is a risk of extremely heavy rainfall in some hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
On Monday, moderate rain is also projected for many places in both the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
The department further projects that heavy to very heavy rain could occur in the hilly areas of these provinces, as well as in one or two places in the Terai, including Madhesh.
Due to the continuous rainfall, water levels in rivers and streams could rise, posing a risk of floods, landslides, inundation, and soil erosion.
Consequently, the department has urged everyone to maintain high alertness and take necessary precautions.
