KATHMANDU: Nagarjun Mayor Mohan Bahadur Basnet has been sentenced to 8 years and 3 months in prison for corruption by the Special Court bench chaired by Tek Narayan Kunwar and member Ram Bahadur Thapa.
He was also fined NPR 23.06 million. In a related money laundering case, he received 3 years in jail and was fined NPR 262.55 million.
His illegally acquired property is set to be confiscated.
Basnet will serve an additional 3 months and 10 days for offenses related to public service.
He must also pay NPR 10.50 million in compensation, which is to be deposited from Padma Colony Pvt. Ltd., Padma Merchant Company Pvt. Ltd., and their chairman Rajup Prasad Kandel, who was also sentenced to 8 years in prison.
The case involves bribery transactions amounting to NPR 92.25 million connected to these individuals and companies.
Basnet was elected mayor twice consecutively from the Nepali Congress party.
