KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is set to present its budget for the fiscal year 2025/26 on Sunday, July 13, 2025, following a prolonged internal dispute between Mayor Balendra Shah and other elected representatives.
The decision was made during an executive meeting held on Friday, where it was agreed that Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol will present the budget at the municipal assembly.
The move marks a significant step toward resolving the months-long budget stalemate triggered by conflict over administrative authority.
The Revenue Estimation and Budget Ceiling Determination Committee, which includes Dangol, several ward chairpersons, and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Saroj Guragain, finalized the total budget ceiling at Rs 25.11 billion for the upcoming fiscal year.
The meeting, held in Mayor Shah’s office, outlined the tentative budget allocations: 3% for economic activities, 51% for infrastructure, 20% for social development, 12% for governance and inter-relations, and 14% for operations and administration.
This budget presentation comes after months of deadlock that began in early Poush (December 2024). Tensions escalated when Mayor Shah attempted to hold budget meetings by bypassing CAO Guragain, resulting in institutional friction that delayed the process.
Due to this internal dispute, KMC failed to present its budget on the previously scheduled date of Asar 10 (June 24). With a consensus now in place, the metropolitan government is finally moving ahead with its budget plan for the new fiscal year.
