ISLAMABAD: Monsoon rains have claimed the lives of 216 people and injured 580 in Pakistan since June 26, according to the country’s Disaster Management Authority, as reported by Geo TV.

In the past 24 hours alone, at least 13 deaths have been recorded due to heavy rainfall and flooding.

Continuous rain has caused widespread floods and waterlogging, resulting in significant human casualties.

The majority of deaths occurred when houses collapsed or were submerged due to floods and landslides, while some fatalities were caused by lightning strikes and other seasonal hazards.

The Disaster Management Authority reported 12 deaths in Punjab and one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the last 24 hours.

Among the victims were four children and three women. Since the start of the monsoon season, 101 children have died.

The authority’s statement also revealed that nearly 800 homes have been destroyed and approximately 200 animals have perished since the rains began.

According to a recent UN News report, there is a looming threat of flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan due to potential glacial lake outbursts.

In 2022, monsoon floods in Pakistan claimed more than 1,700 lives, displaced millions, and caused estimated economic losses of around 4 billion US dollars.
