KATHMANDU: Police have detained 47 individuals, including infamous gang leader Milan Gurung, aka Chakre Milan, during a birthday celebration rally in Kathmandu.

In a joint operation by Kathmandu District Police Office and Valley Crime Investigation Department, the group was arrested from Thamel and Maharajgunj areas for involvement in criminal activities.

Chakre Milan was celebrating his birthday on Thursday at Hotel Sambala in Maharajgunj. Authorities raided the event after reports of loud commotion and disruptive activities.

Milan had caused a public disturbance earlier by blocking roads with a rally of numerous vehicles.

Under police surveillance for years due to his criminal record, Chakre Milan’s group had been active in intimidating people at restaurants and nightclubs in Thamel and Maharajgunj, and involved in extortion, fights, and hooliganism.

Among those arrested was Yubaraj Gurung, aka Sanubhai, a known associate of the late Kumar Shrestha ‘Ghaite,’ killed in a police encounter.

Chakre Milan was previously arrested multiple times but often released. Notably, he was detained in 2017 from Maharajgunj and was even nominated by CPN-UML as a candidate in the 2022 parliamentary elections from Gorkha-2.

All arrested individuals are being presented in court for investigation, with further legal procedures underway, according to Kathmandu District Police Office.
