UTTARKASHI: A sudden and devastating cloudburst struck the Harsil area of Uttarkashi district around 1:40 pm on Tuesday, triggering massive flash floods that have caused widespread destruction in Dharali village, a key stopover for pilgrims en route to Gangotri.
The disaster has left several homes, hotels, and shops destroyed or damaged, while rescue operations are underway to save those trapped.
Tragically, approximately 10 Army personnel stationed at a camp in lower Harsil have been reported missing following the floods. Despite this, the Indian Army remains actively engaged in rescue efforts, underscoring its commitment to aiding civilians during natural disasters.
Rescue teams from the Army’s Ibex brigade, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to the affected area. Three ITBP teams have already reached Dharali to assist operations.
According to the Army’s Surya Command, a massive mudslide struck Dharali village in the Kheer Gad area on Tuesday afternoon, sending a sudden surge of debris and water through the settlement.
Troops of the Ibex brigade were immediately mobilized to conduct rescue operations amid difficult conditions caused by damaged roads, ongoing heavy rainfall, and network disruptions.
