KATHMANDU: Nepal’s monsoon trough is currently positioned south of its normal location in the eastern region, while in the western region it remains near its average alignment, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
Today, most parts of the country are experiencing cloudy conditions. Light to moderate rainfall has been recorded in parts of Madhesh Province, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim provinces.
Other areas see only isolated showers. Forecasters warn that continued rainfall could increase water levels in local rivers. Morning measurements show that major rivers, including Koshi, Narayani, Bagmati, Karnali, Mahakali, and their tributaries, along with Kamala, East Rapti, West Rapti, and Babai, are currently below flood alert thresholds.
Several small rivers in districts such as Dolakha, Kavrepalanchok, Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun, Kaski, Baglung, Myagdi, Surkhet, Dailekh, Jajarkot, Achham, Doti, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, Bajhang, Bajura, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur, and nearby areas are expected to see a significant rise in flow.
A moderate to high risk of flash floods is possible in some rivers. Similarly, small rivers in districts including Ilam, Jhapa, Taplejung, Terhathum, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Makwanpur, Dhading, Nuwakot, Syangja, Gulmi, Arghakhanchi, Palpa, Pyuthan, Nawalpur, Nawalparasi, Dang, Jumla, Dolpa, Mugu, Humla, and surrounding areas may also experience sudden increases in water levels, with a moderate risk of floods.
Authorities advise residents near small rivers to stay alert and follow local safety instructions as rainfall continues.
