KATHMANDU: What began as a peaceful youth-led movement against corruption and the government’s social media ban erupted into confrontation today, as police fired tear gas at protesters advancing toward Parliament building in New Baneshwor.

The clashes broke out after demonstrators defied prohibitory orders and attempted to breach restricted areas.

A crowd marching from Maitighar Mandala broke through police barricades and pushed toward New Baneshwor, while another group advancing from Tinkune reached the Parliament gates.

Both fronts eventually converged at the federal Parliament complex, where police responded with tear gas to disperse the swelling crowd.

Earlier in the day, thousands of young people had gathered at Maitighar Mandala carrying the national flag, singing patriotic songs, and displaying placards with bold slogans such as “Public frustration is at its peak, while leaders fill their pockets,” “Free voice is our right,” and “Stop Corruption.”

Many participants, some in their school and college uniforms, pledged discipline—vowing to protect trees, avoid vandalism, and keep the demonstrations nonviolent.

Organizers stressed that political party leaders and affiliated groups were not welcome, underscoring the independent and citizen-driven nature of the protests.

Independent youths, professionals, artists, and even some lawmakers expressed solidarity, commending the impartial character of the movement.

Despite the escalation in New Baneshwor, the demonstrations retained widespread support and have begun spreading beyond the capital.

Similar Gen Z-led protests were reported in Rupandehi, Chitwan, Makwanpur, Kaski, Morang and Dang, reflecting a growing nationwide wave of dissent.

Analysts say the movement marks a turning point in Nepal’s politics, as the younger generation’s frustration—once confined to social media—now spills into the streets and begins to shape the nation’s political consciousness.

Organizers have urged participants to stay informed through platforms like TikTok and Viber, defying restrictions meant to silence their voices.
