KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has urged the President to take initiative for a constitutional and political solution to peacefully resolve the existing problems by ending the current transitional period.

The FNJ chairperson Nirmala Sharma has demanded in a statement issued today that the country should seek a smooth resolution through the processes and institutions primarily determined by the current constitution.

FNJ has emphasized that while the President has already called on the Gen Z representatives for dialogue regarding the way out for the country from the present problems, it is necessary for the security bodies to facilitate the establishment of an interim government as soon as possible, and this initiative should come from the President. It has been reported that PAPAD, a coalition of six professional organisations, including the FNJ, is ready to facilitate this process.

“Initiatives to address all political issues should be taken from the President’s Office, not from the Army Headquarters. Recently, the role played by the army in maintaining peace and security is commendable,” said a statement released by the Federation.

The FNJ has sincerely appealed to all stakeholders to be responsible and sensitive at this difficult and decisive juncture in history, emphasizing the need to achieve further accomplishments while protecting the democratic republic by addressing the demands for structural reforms raised by the Gen Z.

The federation has stated that it has been continuously advocating for the protection of democracy, human rights, press freedom and freedom of expression, and given that the government has resigned, and another government has not yet been formed, the country is currently in a transitional state, and a way out should be sought promptly as mentioned in the statement.

The FNJ also expressed heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives during the protests which were carried out by the youth demanding good governance and checking corruption, and wished for the quick recovery of the injured. The statement issued by Chairperson Sharma stated that it is unfortunate that journalists and media, who are always active in informing the public and for peace and democracy, have been targeted by the protesters.
