NAWALPUR:  Following the end of the monsoon, scrub typhus infections are rising in Nawalpur, with 44 cases reported so far, according to the Provincial Public Health Office, Nawalparasi (Bardaghat–Susta East).

Information Officer Chhabilal Subedi said that as of September 21, only 17 cases had been recorded. “In the past 20 days, 27 new cases have been reported in Nawalpur,” he added. Of the total patients, 38 have recovered, while six are still receiving treatment at hospitals.

Although dengue infections remain low, Subedi warned that scrub typhus is spreading rapidly and urged caution. He explained that while the symptoms are similar to dengue, scrub typhus is 30 times more deadly, caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi, transmitted through mite bites.

Office Chief Shailendra Kumar Singh noted that while scrub typhus was previously sporadic, the sudden rise—10 new cases in a week—prompted preventive measures to avoid an outbreak.

He warned that untreated infections can be fatal, highlighting the need for timely medical attention.
