KATHMANDU: Medical interns and resident doctors staged a protest at Maitighar Mandala, demanding immediate reforms to their working conditions, labor rights, and salary structures.

Rallying under the slogan “Gen Z Government, Give Justice to Gen Z Doctors,” they presented a seven-point demand to the government, Medical Education Commission, and Nepal Medical Council.

Key demands include enforcing a maximum 12-hour daily work limit (72 hours weekly) with a mandatory weekly day off, ensuring paid maternity leave for female trainees, providing overtime pay under the Labor Act, and adjusting salaries to align with the latest fiscal budget (8th-level officer scale for residents and at least 6th-level for interns).

Additionally, the protesters are calling for dedicated monitoring committees to prevent exploitation, mental health support in colleges, reduced financial penalties for dropping out of residency, and the removal of the mandatory one-year work experience requirement between undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
