KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has expressed hope that the Chhath festival will serve as an inspiration for Nepalis to foster national unity, social harmony, and respect for nature.
In a message of best wishes on Monday, President Paudel said that Chhath symbolizes purity, faith, and reverence toward nature.
He emphasized that the festival promotes equality and harmony among people of different backgrounds.
“I am confident that this festival will inspire all Nepalis to end discrimination, injustice, and social anomalies related to class, caste, and gender; to strengthen mutual harmony; and to preserve our original culture,” the President stated.
Highlighting its broader social impact, he said that Chhath contributes to sustainable peace, good governance, development, and prosperity.
The festival—dedicated to Chhathi Mata and worshipping the sun, water, and earth—features fasting, prayer rituals, and overnight vigils along riverbanks, ponds, and lakes.
President Paudel also underscored Chhath’s environmental and spiritual importance.
“By worshipping the setting and rising sun, we acknowledge that life on earth is impossible without the sun. The observance of Chhath expresses gratitude to nature, enhances environmental awareness, and strengthens family and social bonds,” he added.
