MUSTANG: Continuous rainfall since Thursday night has triggered landslides and floods at 10 different locations along the Kagbeni–Korala road section in Mustang, causing severe damage to the road infrastructure and blocking vehicular movement.
According to Chief District Officer Bishnu Prasad Bhusal, floods mixed with mud and debris have destroyed multiple sections of the road between Kagbeni and Chhusang.
He said efforts are underway to clear the debris using heavy equipment, but traffic movement is unlikely to resume immediately.
The rainfall has also disrupted communication services in several areas. Multiple landslides have fallen onto the road from Kagbeni to Chhaille in Ward 3 of Baragung Muktikshhetra, blocking the route since early Friday morning.
Ward Chairperson Pramesh Gurung reported that about 50 meters of the road between Kagbeni and Tangbe has collapsed due to flooding, rendering the section completely destroyed.
More than four spots along this stretch remain obstructed.
Similarly, continuous rainfall has caused extensive damage along the Tangbe–Chhusang section, where floods in the Tangbe River washed away portions of the road entirely.
In Mustang Ged area above Chhaille, over 35 meters of the road have collapsed due to a landslide, according to DSP Chhiring Kippa Lama of the District Police Office. He said a retaining wall built earlier to stabilize the road was washed away, causing further collapse.
On Saturday, a team led by CDO Bhusal, along with security personnel, conducted an on-site inspection of the damaged sections.Three heavy machines have been mobilized to begin road repair and clearance works.
The Kaligandaki Corridor Benighat–Jomsom–Korala Road Project has also deployed resources to help reopen the route. Two local excavators and one loader from the Myagdi section have already reached the affected areas.
However, according to Ward Chairperson Karma Ghyacho Gurung of Baragung–4, road infrastructure has been destroyed in multiple places, making it impossible to resume traffic immediately.
Although repair work began on Saturday, officials estimate it will take several days to reopen the route due to widespread flood and landslide damage.
The District Administration Office, Mustang, has urged the public to avoid traveling along the Kagbeni–Korala road until further notice.
Earlier, continuous rainfall had also blocked the Jomsom–Kagbeni road at three points on Thursday night, but local authorities managed to clear it by deploying bulldozers on Saturday morning, restoring access for pilgrims heading toward Muktinath after a 24-hour closure.
