KATHMANDU: The High-Level Commission formed to probe the Gen Z movement took a five-and-a-half-hour statement from Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.

Lamichhane was brought from Nakkhu Prison to the commission’s office at Singha Durbar on Wednesday for questioning.

“He was brought via prison administration and questioned for five and a half hours,” commission member and former Additional Inspector General of Police, Bigyan Raj Sharma, told Nepal News.

The questioning focused on events at Nakkhu Prison on September 9, the second day of the Gen Z movement.

Lamichhane was asked about the incidents that occurred in the prison, how he managed to exit, who accompanied him, whether it was planned, and other related details.

The commission also questioned him about the roles of prison administration and police during the incident.

“Not everything discussed can be disclosed publicly, but all topics were covered,” Sharma said.

Lamichhane’s escape from Nakkhu Prison triggered a nationwide wave of jailbreaks.

Prisoners fled from 26 prisons across the country, totaling 14,549 inmates, of whom 5,101 have still not been traced.

The commission plans to record statements from security personnel next.

Authorities in charge of police operations in the Kathmandu Valley during the Gen Z movement have been instructed not to leave the capital.

The commission directed the Police Headquarters that any officer posted in the Valley must seek permission before leaving.

Former Home Ministry Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi, among others, was also instructed to seek permission before traveling outside the capital.

On Wednesday, Duwadi went to Chitwan after obtaining approval from Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, drawing the commission’s attention.
