KATHMANDU: The chariot procession of Rato Machhindranath, known as Nepal’s longest-running festival (Jatra), is set to begin this year from the April 21.

Preparations are currently in full swing in the Pulchowk area of Lalitpur, where construction of the chariot is progressing rapidly. Built in a traditional style using wood, the chariot stands approximately 60 feet tall.

Local craftsmen are constructing it following special religious rituals and traditions. Rato Machhindranath is worshipped in the Kathmandu Valley as the deity of rain, prosperity, and good harvest. There is a strong religious belief that the arrival of Machhindranath helps end drought and brings prosperity to the country. Photos: Nepal Photo Library
