JOMSOM: A Nepali pilgrim has died of altitude sickness while returning after visiting the famous religious site, Muktinath Temple in Mustang.

According to the District Police Office, Mustang, 85-year-old Chitrabahadur Malla of Bhagawanpur, Ward No. 9 of Shivaraj Municipality, Kapilvastu, suddenly developed breathing difficulties while returning from Kagbeni in Baragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality.

He was rushed for treatment to the Provincial Hospital in Jomsom, but was declared dead on Tuesday afternoon.

Police confirmed that he was brought to the hospital unconscious and could not be revived. Family members accompanying him are reported to be safe.

Authorities in Mustang District say that altitude sickness is commonly seen among elderly people, those with chronic illnesses, and vulnerable pilgrims traveling in harsh high-altitude weather conditions.

In the month of April alone, three people—including one Indian national—have reportedly died due to altitude sickness.

Most of the victims in the district are pilgrims visiting Muktinath Temple. Medical experts say early symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, fatigue, and dizziness.

As the condition worsens, patients may experience difficulty in walking, breathing problems, nausea, and diarrhea.

Doctors advise that once symptoms appear, travelers should avoid further ascent, rest, drink fluids, and descend to lower altitudes if necessary while seeking medical care immediately.

Health professionals warn that while altitude sickness is treatable with timely care, negligence can lead to serious complications such as brain or lung swelling.
