KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has criticized the government for what he called the “illusion of majority power,” urging it to strictly follow constitutional limits and the rule of law.

Speaking after briefing party lawmakers in Parliament, Thapa highlighted three main concerns: misuse of parliamentary majority, attempts to influence constitutional appointments, and excessive force in recent eviction drives.

He warned that majority in Parliament does not permit arbitrary decisions or misuse of authority.

He also expressed concern over ordinances and amendments related to the Constitutional Council, alleging they could affect the independence of constitutional appointments.

Thapa further criticized eviction operations in Kathmandu’s riverbank settlements, calling them excessive and inhumane, while stressing that genuine landless citizens must be properly rehabilitated.

He said Nepali Congress will continue supporting government efforts on good governance but will firmly oppose any actions that violate constitutional principles.
