BEIJING: U.S. President Donald Trump has concluded his two-day visit to China and is returning to Washington.

The summit ended without major breakthroughs on trade or any tangible Chinese assistance to end his war with Iran, despite two days of public praise for his host.

The visit—the first by a U.S. president to China since 2017—was aimed at securing concrete outcomes to bolster Trump’s sagging approval ratings ahead of crucial midterm elections.

The talks featured heavy pageantry, including military displays and ceremonial tours, but behind closed doors Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Trump that any mishandling of Taiwan could trigger conflict.

Trump, who remained unusually restrained throughout the trip, declined to comment on the issue and largely focused on praising Xi’s leadership and hospitality.

At their final meeting at the Zhongnanhai complex, Trump said, “It’s been an incredible visit. I think a lot of good has come of it.”

While Trump sought quick economic wins, including a potential Boeing aircraft deal, Xi emphasized long-term stable trade relations between the two countries, highlighting differing priorities.

The visit also ended without progress on rare earth mineral exports, an issue that has strained ties since China imposed controls in response to U.S. tariffs in 2025. Chinese state media notably made no mention of the issue during the summit.
