KATHMANDU: A severe heatwave warning has been issued for the Terai plains, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 38°C or above over the next three days.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, the alert covers several areas across Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim provinces, where hot and potentially hazardous conditions are expected to persist.

Forecasts indicate a moderate heatwave is highly likely in isolated pockets of the Terai belt, particularly in Madhesh and Lumbini provinces. Meanwhile, several lowland areas in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Sudurpashchim provinces are expected to experience extremely hot days. Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Under the government’s color-coded weather alert system, an Orange Alert has been issued for Bardiya, Banke, Dang, Kapilvastu, Rupandehi, and Nawalparasi in the western and mid-western Terai, as well as Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Siraha, and Saptari in the central and eastern Terai. These areas are expected to face the most intense heat and have been advised to remain on high alert.

A Yellow Alert has been issued for Kanchanpur, Kailali, Nawalparasi, Chitwan, Sunsari, Morang, and Jhapa, where residents are advised to stay updated with weather information and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Health officials have recommended drinking plenty of water, avoiding outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and wearing light, breathable clothing until the heatwave conditions subside.
